Unit 7 "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself"
This saying applies to the health and wellnes professional in respect to instructing a client to do a exercise without you completing it yourself and understanding. Making sure that they can the full effect of things is your responsibility and if your have never experienced it. You have a onligation to your clients to be able to instruct them and explain what ever practice you are involved in. Continuing on the path by implementing psychological and spiritual growth in my personal life on a daily basis and continuing to grow will spiritually will ensure health and well -being

You've provided a great explanation of how health professionals are obligated to their clients/patients in regards to giving advice or recommendations. You are definitely right that as health professionals, we have the responsibility to properly instruct, guide, and explain the practices that we are involved in, our recommendations, and the contemplative exercises.

ReplyDeleteYou obviously understand the expression very well. We simply can't teach what we have never learned. As a patient I wouldn't trust a health care professional to treat me for a condition that they do not understand. It's sort of like asking a physician for advice on vitamins and minerals or for mental health counseling. That's not their area of expertise and they are not the most qualified person to advise me. It's important to practice what we preach.
You are so right. If we have not experienced it how can we fully make our patients understand. That's why i like if we need acupuncture or massage we can go to a person that has experienced it. It makes it more easier to learn and accept if we know the person that is doing it has experienced it.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, it would be really hard to lead a person down a road you've never been. It's important for health professions to speak from experience and in order to relate to the experience that their patient is going to feel, they have to travel that path. It's like the saying goes "practice what you preach."
